Competitiveness of Zacatecas (Mexico) Protected Agriculture: The Fresh Tomato Industry AgEcon
Padilla-Bernal, Luz E.; Rumayor-Rodriguez, Agustin; Perez-Veyna, Oscar; Reyes-Rivas, Elivier.
The industry of fresh tomato production under protective structures in Zacatecas has undergone accelerated growth in recent years. Free trade, market globalization, new trends in the agro-food sector, as well as the food and financial crises, are impacting its competitiveness. In this study competitiveness of the industry of fresh tomato production under protective structures in Zacatecas was evaluated to provide elements that contribute to the design of policies aimed toward development of sustainable competitiveness. A systemic competitiveness model was applied, and a SWOT analysis was performed. The information was obtained through interviews with technicians and/or owners of the production units and complemented with interviews with researchers and...

Enhancing the efficiency of evaporative cooling pads for livestock barns and greenhouses by moisture adsorption CIGR Journal
Samer, Mohamed.
High levels of relative humidity negatively affect the efficiency of the evaporative cooling pads installed in livestock barns and greenhouses. Consequently, the productivity decreases causing economic losses. Therefore, this project aims at prototyping innovative dehumidifying/desiccant segments to be installed on the conventional cooling pads enabling them to provide suitable microclimate conditions, especially temperature and relative humidity, for animals and plants. The hypothesis is that desiccant segments adsorb air moisture before introducing the air into the pads; consequently, the treated air is then able to absorb more moisture from the cooling pads, i.e. the cooling pads evaporate more water in the treated air, where water evaporation requires...

Irrigation water pricing between governmental policies and farmers’ perception: Implications for green-houses horticultural production in Teboulba (Tunisia) AgEcon
Chebil, Ali; Frija, Aymen; Thabet, Chokri.
A positive mathematical programming model was constructed in this study to assess the effect of three water pricing scenarios on Teboulba’s agricultural production systems. The effects of these scenarios were estimated for three groups of farmers from three irrigated districts. Results show that water demand in group 1 remains inelastic until achieving the price of 0.20 TD. A price above this level decreases water consumption, farmer’s incomes as well as seasonal labor demand. For groups 2 and 3, the water demand curves remain highly inelastic even with a full cost recovery price. However, once reaching this last price, the model shows important income reductions reaching 20% of the current observed income. Moreover, a pricing policy aiming to recover...

Measured Energy use in a Greenhouse with Tomatoes Compared to Predicted use by a Mechanistic Model Including Transpiration CIGR Journal
Sven Nimmermark.
In regions with a colder climate the use of heat energy for climatization of greenhouses can be significant. Beside outdoor temperatures and climate also transpiration affects the use of heat energy since heating and ventilation or dehumidification may be required in order to keep the humidity in the greenhouse below levels which may lead to plant diseases. A reliable model is a powerful tool to predict energy use for greenhouse cultivation. Thus, a mechanistic model including transpiration and energy use for dehumidification and hourly output data was developed from an older simpler model. To be reliable, modelled data must fit with real data. The aim of the present study is to compare measured and modelled use of heat energy. Thus, energy use for a...

Prediction of total solar irradiance on tilted greenhouse surfaces CIGR Journal
Ronoh, Erick K..
Solar radiation is the driving force for the surface energy balance in buildings such as greenhouses.  The greenhouses are generally tilted towards the sun in order to maximize the solar irradiance on the surfaces.  Precise computation of the solar radiation received on these surfaces assumes an important role in the energy simulation.  It is practical to calculate the total solar irradiance on the tilted surfaces based on the solar global and diffuse radiation intensities on horizontal surfaces.  In this work, a south-facing thermal box inclined at 26.5° from the horizontal was used for solar radiation measurements.  Additionally, the recorded solar radiation data were retrieved for the study location and used to develop an empirical correlation.  The...

Thermal energy use in three Swedish greenhouses – the outdoor temperature-dependent variation and the influence of wind speed under no-sunlight conditions CIGR Journal
Katarzyna Maslak; Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Dept. of Biosystems and Technology, Alnarp; Sven Nimmermark; Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Dept. of Biosystems and Technology, Alnarp.
Thermal energy is used in greenhouses for the temperature and humidity control.  In the North of Europe, energy expenditures have a significant share in the total greenhouse production cost.  A study was performed to quantify and analyze the use of thermal energy in three Swedish commercial greenhouses (two with tomatoes and one with ornamental plants), to test the hypothesis that substantial amounts of heat are used at higher outdoor temperatures, and to investigate the influence of the wind speed on the energy use under no-sunlight conditions.  Hourly climate data were registered by means of Priva control systems.  The use of thermal energy was computed based on the readings from the flowmeters and the temperature of the inlet/outlet water to/from the...
